Undergraduate

The College of Professional Studies and Lowell Institute School are committed to providing access to undergraduate education for working adults. We have designed several points of entry into CPS/LIS, each tailored to our students' diverse backgrounds and experience. Any students interested in taking a course can do so by simply registering. However, those interested in a degree or certificate program, or those who have been out of school for a significant period of time, should consult an adviser who can help plan a course of study.

OPEN ADMISSIONS -- DEGREE AND CERTIFICATE STUDENTS

Students interested in a certificate or degree must apply to the program. The College of Professional Studies and Lowell Institute School have an open admissions policy, meaning we will accept any student who is 19 years of age and has a high school diploma or a GED. More than 60 percent of our students enter a degree program through open admissions. Most of these students have credit for prior learning and many have attended college in the past. Students who apply to a degree program are eligible for financial aid, are assigned an adviser, and have access to Northeastern amenities. Once enrolled in a degree program that corresponds with your personal or professional goals, every quarter you will choose from a wide variety of courses offered. You also have the option of working with one of our professional academic advisers who will create a path of courses leading to your degree. If you take at least six quarter hours (typically two courses) per term, you become eligible to apply for scholarships, financial aid, and one of our financial aid advisers will work with you to determine the best way to finance your education.

OPEN ENROLLMENT -- PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT STUDENTS

If you have a high school diploma or a college degree, you can begin taking classes simply by registering for a course. Some of our courses are open to advanced high school students. More than 30 percent of our quarterly students are open enrollment students who take one or two courses per quarter for professional development, personal enrichment, to transfer to another college, or in preparation for graduate school. If you would like to take a course as an open enrollment student, you can use our quarterly schedule guide or our website to register for a course. There is a limit of 16 quarter hours a student can earn as an open enrollment student and transfer to a certificate or degree at the College of Professional Studies and Lowell Institute School. As an open enrollment student, you may take as many courses as you wish for professional development, but only 16 quarter hours will count toward a degree or certificate. If you plan to earn a degree or certificate, it is strongly recommended that you become an open admissions student as soon as possible.
