Description Examines the continuing themes of the nature of the American dream, the desire to create a distinctly American literature, and continues through the artistic and literary movement known as modernism. Surveys the major American writers and major literary works through these eras. Includes works by such writers as Whitman, Dickinson, Twain, James, Hemingway, Moore, Faulkner, Ellison, Cahan, and Morrison.
