Description Surveys the development of Western—largely European—society and values from the beginning of the Renaissance to the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the integration of the western European economy. Covers royal absolutism, the rise of the scientific world view, the political and economic revolutions that transformed Europe at the end of the eighteen century, the development of nationalism and Marxism, the race for colonies, the cultural transformations of the early twentieth century, the rise of fascism, World War II and the Holocaust, the cold war and decolonization, and the current state of Western civilization.
