Sheltered English Instruction and Assessment

ED3616 / 4 q.h.

Participants will have the opportunity to critically analyze the ways in which contemporary issues are affecting the teaching and learning of non-native speakers in the schools. The course addresses the following questions: How are these issues manifested inside and outside the classroom? How do our opinions about these issues affect expectations and our ability to establish a learning environment in the classroom? What are the obstacles that prevent students/teachers from considering these issues when planning lessons? What understandings, in regard to these issues, need to be in place in order to create attitudes, strategies, and curricula that promote students achieving high levels of performance? How can sheltered instruction be a part of the classroom on a daily basis? What does sheltered instruction look like in content area and enriching classes?
