Basic Optics and Optical Systems Design
ETE4391 / 4 q.h.
This course develops an understanding of optical system layout and design based on geometrical optics analysis. Beginning with analytical and graphical concepts for image construction the course develops an understanding of the imaging equation, the cardinal points and the general categories of optical systems for both linear and angular magnification. Radiometric characterizations and relations for optical systems are developed to establish the size of all optical elements for field of view and image brightness considerations. Parameters are investigated that determine the image quality for an optical system leading to characterization of overall optical performance for the system. This understanding is applied to analyzing the imaging and design considerations of most standard optical systems starting with the eye.
This course is not offered at this time. Please check back after January 26, 2009.
