Fall and Spring Courses
In the 15-week semester and in the Intensive 8 Week programs, we offer classes at five levels of English. Courses are designed to prepare students for academic and professional work in English and to succeed on TOEFL and TOEIC exams. Students are in class for 20 hours per week.

Core Structure and Communication is the integration of grammar, listening and speaking. This course aims to increase accuracy and fluency in communication with extensive small group practice, homework assignments and additional projects in the listening and video labs. In addition, this course provides opportunities for conversation with native speaking peers from the University. Furthermore, very advanced students may be permitted to take one academic course in University College for university credit.

Reading provides reading practice while covering strategies for efficient reading, skimming, scanning, identifying main and supporting ideas, making inferences and summarizing. This course also targets vocabulary development.

Composition provides intensive practice in writing with an emphasis on grammatical accuracy and clarity of content. This course focuses on writing well-organized and effectively developed paragraphs as well as giving attention to individual writing needs. Problematic grammar areas are identified and reviewed.

Listening, Speaking and Pronunciation for language students and international teaching assistants is a course that explores techniques of effective oral communication and provides opportunities for extensive practice. This course develops active-listening strategies for improving comprehension. The focus on pronunciation targets vowels, consonants, as well as the patterns of stress and intonation that aid non-native speakers in speaking English intelligibly. The language lab facilities provide a place for directed laboratory practice from a variety of speaking activities.

"It's a good program where I can improve my English a lot. At the same time I can make many international friends here."

Summer Courses
In the summer, the ELC offers courses at five different levels. Students are in class for 16 hours per week. There are no classes on Fridays, so students have free time to explore Boston and New England.

Communication Skills seeks to improve listening, speaking and grammar skills. The course will develop fluency and confidence in communication in both professional and social settings, enhance listening skills, and examine the grammar of English. Class activities include discussion, dictations, presentations, and the use of music and movies to enhance learning.

Reading and Writing focuses on developing students’ abilities to write both academically and professionally. Students study sentence, paragraph, and essay structures as well as examine letter and resume writing styles. Furthermore, students have the opportunity to enhance their reading skills through practice with class readings and authentic texts.
