Started in 1998, the Pre-MBA Program has enabled more that 100 students to gain acceptance to and graduate from MBA programs at Northeastern, in Boston, across the United States and in programs in the United Kingdom. This full-time program is jointly offered to international students by the English Language Center (ELC) and the College of Business Administration (CBA) at Northeastern University. Students accepted to the program receive I-20 visas. The university is located near the center of Boston, an historic and beautiful city, which is the university center of America and home to many world-class universities and MBA programs.
This is a successful program for students who want to improve their speaking, presenting, listening and writing skills so that they can:
• get into a top MBA program at a well-known university
• be a player in graduate MBA classes with American students
• participate professionally in international business settings after graduation
This is a successful program for students who want to improve their English skills so that they can do well with the internet-based TOEFL test, which has a very heavy emphasis on listening, note-taking, writing and speaking capabilities.
The Pre-MBA Program runs from September to June each year. You can start in September or in January. You may complete the program in April or decide to continue until the end of June.

Some of the members of the Pre MBA Program 2008 have just received their diplomas at the end of the Spring Semester. Other members are continuing in the optional course and will receive diplomas in June.
You will have guaranteed admission to the graduate degree program, Master of Science in Leadership or to the Master of Science in Project Management program. This 12-month program is offered by the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern University.
Students who typically apply to the Pre-MBA Program at Northeastern want to:

Fall Semester
During the fifteen-week long Fall Semester you will receive 28 hours of instruction each week. Your instructors will be experienced experts in language development from the ELC, MBA professors from the CBA, an American undergraduate student for conversation practice and an instructor from Princeton Review for your GMAT class.
Business Core Class (10 hours a week). You will increase your business vocabulary, develop skills for better presenting and interviewing, prepare for the new TOEFL test, make field trips to other universities to explore their MBA programs and present a report on your intern work as a volunteer.
Business Writing (5 hours a week). You will improve your organizational writing skills, learn to use websites to evaluate MBA programs, choose the schools you want to apply to, prepare and write your application package with cover letter, resume and essays. You will also practice writing essays for the TOEFL and GMAT. You will learn how to organize and prepare research papers.
Business Reading (5 hours a week). You will receive extensive instruction and practice for the verbal section of the GMAT. You will learn how to read and organize notes from reading business textbooks. You will develop skills in note-taking in lecture and case classes. You will develop skills in asking questions and responding to professors in MBA classes.
American Society and Management (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will develop your foundation management skills for MBA classes. You will receive instruction from a Management professor in the MBA program. You will read a college-level business textbook, take notes, write two research papers, make two presentations and take a final exam.
Economics for Business (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will continue to develop your foundation skills for MBA classes. You will receive instruction from an Economics professor in the MBA program. You will read an econmics textbook, take notes, write two research papers, make two presentations and take a final exam.
Kaplan GMAT (4 hours a week for 8 weeks). You will improve your skills in taking the GMAT more efficiently and effectively by attending a GMAT review course, which is held exclusively for Pre-MBA students at the Northeastern campus. You will have access to online tests as well as a GMAT textbook.
Conversation Partner (2 hours a week). You will meet with an American graduate or undergraduate student for conversation practice.
Volunteer Intern. You will use the university services office to choose a community group for you to join to perform social service work. You will have the opportunity to interact with Americans in a work environment. You will have to prepare a report and make a presentation about the efficiency of the organization you joined.

Spring Semester
During the fifteen-week long Spring Semester you will undergo rigorous training in working with business cases and in building your foundation business skills. You will be a student in a for-credit MBA class in the full time MBA program at Northeastern. You will receive expert guidance and feedback in finalizing your essays and paperwork to complete applications to the MBA programs of your choice. You will also complete your GMAT training course with your instructor from Princeton Review.
Business Case Program (14 hours a week for eight weeks).You will experience the fast pace and demands of the MBA case class. You will improve your speaking and presenting skills as you work with 5 instructors to become confident with the case method. You will work with 30 cases, engage in 3 team bargaining sessions and take part in 3 team presentations. You will have extensive practice with writing. You will have to write 10 case analyses, a team business plan, a marketing report and a recommendation memo.
Accounting Principles (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will increase your vocabulary and develop an understanding of the American system and concepts of accounting. Your instructor will be an MBA Accounting professor with experience and expertise in the field. You will develop financial skills which will make a crucial difference to you when you begin your first semester as an MBA student.
Quantitative Business Methods (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will continue to develop important skills, concepts and business vocabulary as you work with your MBA professor to learn statistical methods and perform financial analysis of corporate balance sheets.
Introduction to Marketing (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will develop valuable skills to perform analysis of marketing situations. You will build confidence and experience through case analyses so that you can deal successfully with marketing strategies as an MBA student. Your instructor will be a professor with significant professional experience related to marketing products and services.
Managing Information Resources (3 hours a week for 7 weeks). You will be enrolled in this for-credit course in the Full-Time MBA Program. You will receive academic credit, which you can use toward your MBA degree at Northeastern University. You will test your skills, English and ability to compete with first-year Northeastern MBA students. You will learn how companies can use computer systems to manage the flow of information.
Kaplan GMAT (2 hours a week for 2 weeks). You will complete your training in taking the GMAT test in these refresher sessions. Your instructor from Kaplan will continue to work with you to improve your skills in taking the GMAT more efficiently and effectively.
This segment of the Pre-MBA Program is optional. Students have the choice of completing the program at the end of the Spring Semester or continuing on with this second course offered to MBA students in the Full Time MBA Program at Northeastern.
Managing the Global Enterprise (6 hours a week for 7 weeks). You may decide to enroll in this for-credit course in the Full-Time MBA Program. You will receive academic credit, which you can use toward your MBA degree at Northeastern University. You will experience doing a semester-long course in 7 weeks. Again, you will have the opportunity to test your skills and growing confidence as you compete with first-year Northeastern MBA students. You will learn how companies use advanced managerial techniques to run world-wide operations in the twenty-first century.

Accommodation in dormitories at Northeastern is limited, especially in the Fall Semester. However, if you apply early, you will very likely obtain a room. After you have been accepted to the Pre-MBA Program and issued a student ID number, you can contact www.housing.neu.edu to request a dormitory space. If you do not want to live on campus, you can use www.housing.neu.edu to make contact with apartment rental companies to find an apartment. You can also contact the English Language Center to get information about agencies to arrange home stays with American families.
You can use the health infirmary as a student at Northeastern. However, if you become seriously ill and require hospitalization, you will be responsible for hospital bills. For this reason, the university requires that you obtain a medical insurance policy to cover hospital costs. You may purchase an insurance policy through the university for September–August or January–August, depending on your date of entry. Please see Program Format for estimated costs. You may also buy your own insurance in your home country with American coverage. If you obtain your own policy, you will need to bring a copy of the policy with you when you register.
You should apply to start the Pre-MBA Program in September if you:
• have a TOEFL score of 550/213/80 or lower
• have been away from the classroom for a long time
• need to improve your overall speaking, listening and writing skills in English
• have not taken many business courses before
• have not decided which MBA programs you want to apply to
• know that you will need advice in preparing your application essays
• know that you need to take a GMAT preparation course
• know that you have to increase your business vocabulary
• know that you must improve your presentation and interview skills

You can apply to start the Pre-MBA Program in January if you:
• have very strong/excellent English language skills
• have a strong academic record
• have a solid work-experience background
• have TOEFL scores in the 580/237/92 and GMAT scores in the 525 range
• have already selected MBA programs for your applications
• have prepared essays, a resume and cover letter for your applications
• have confidence that you can handle the very heavy workload of the Pre-MBA Program
You can best guarantee success in meeting your MBA goals by applying to start in September. You have more time to identify which MBA program is best for you. You can visit the campuses of different schools and talk to their MBA students and admission officers. You have more opportunity to develop quality application essays as you receive feedback and guidance on your writing from expert instructors at the ELC. You have the opportunity to take eight weekly GMAT classes from Princeton Review in addition to 25 hours of classes each week provided by the ELC and CBA. You have a greater chance to develop your speaking and listening skills, which are so important for success in interviews and the TOEFL iBT. You will take courses from MBA professors, which give you scope to increase your business vocabulary and become accustomed to how graduate students achieve success in American classrooms. Starting in September, you will make yourself a more attractive applicant to MBA programs and build a stronger resume based on the intensive and rigorous training you will have received in the Pre-MBA Program.
Starting in January in the Pre-MBA Program is difficult. You are competing with students who have had months of training and practice because they started in September. You must be special to meet this challenge. Your language and time management skills need to be very strong. As you experience the heavy demands on your energy and time to keep up with your course work in the Pre-MBA Program, you will also have to meet deadlines to submit your MBA applications in February, March and April. You should have already prepared your application package and done GMAT preparation before you come. If you are having difficulty doing your work in Pre-MBA classes and finishing your applications, you may be required to take a Support Class Workshop for five hours a week in addition to your normal workload. There you will receive instruction and assistance in quickly upgrading your writing skills, completing your applications and improving your speaking skills. You will have to pay a tuition supplement of $1100 for this extra instruction.
You are the best judge of which semester to apply to. You should evaluate realistically and honestly the true level of your skills in English. Consider the amount of improvement you must make to reach your goals and the level of confidence you need to display in order to get through an admissions interview successfully. You will receive a warm welcome to the Pre-MBA Program at Northeastern whatever decision you make. You will learn very quickly that your ELC and CBA instructors are highly motivated and successful in helping you achieve your professional and personal goals.

Students who wish to apply to this program need to meet the following requirements:
• completed undergraduate degree
• TOEFL report, if available, with a score of 500/173/61(September application) or 580/237/92 (January application) or better
• work experience
• evidence of leadership skills and contribution to your community
• motivation to succeed
Your application to the Pre-MBA Program must be accompanied by a one-to-two page essay describing your educational background, use of English, leadership qualities, work experience, and reason for wanting to get an MBA. To apply for this program please include the following:

Most students who complete the Pre-MBA Program successfully are accepted to two or three MBA Programs. You will have to submit your application package to schools of your choice, and meet requirements of TOEFL 600/250/100 and GMAT 550, which are typical standards for many programs. The Full Time MBA Program at Northeastern University welcomes your application. Final acceptance decisions will be based on your application essays, academic background, work experience, your scores on the TOEFL and GMAT exams and your performance in the Pre-MBA program. You need to understand that there is no guarantee that you will be accepted to the full time MBA Program at Northeastern University because you enrolled in and completed the Pre-MBA Program.
You will receive extensive assistance and advice if you choose to enter MBA programs in other universities. At the conclusion of the Pre-MBA Program, you will be issued a Certificate in Pre-MBA Studies at Northeastern University indicating successful completion of all program requirements.

Students who successfully complete the Pre-MBA Program have the reputation of being well prepared and motivated. For this reason the School of Professional and Continuing Studies at Northeastern University offers automatic admission to graduates of the Pre-MBA Program to the Master of Science in Leadership Program or to the Master of Science in Project Management Program. You will need to apply to the program of your choice. You will also need to have completed the Pre-MBA Program in good standing. You will require recommendations from your Pre-MBA instructors and a certification of competency in English from the English Language Center.
In the graduate Leadership Program or Project Management Program, you will have the opportunity to focus your studies on one of more than twenty areas of specialization or choose one of seven leadership concentrations. These include Financial Services and Human Resources Management. You will take 13 courses and complete your graduate degree in 12 months. You may also create your own specialized graduate program based on the hundreds of courses offered by the School of Professional and Continuing Studies.
