How long are students involved in experiential learning?

Students are able to participate in a co-op or internship for 3-6 months; students can also execute an Experiential Network project for 6-8 weeks.

What types of positions can students fill?

College of Professional Studies students have very diverse backgrounds and employment histories. They range in age from 19 to 65, and two-thirds are non-traditional, adult learners with a variety of interests and skills who can bring significant experience to the table. We are happy to review any type of job that would be helpful to your organization, but we do require that our students are given a challenge that meets their career aspirations and skill levels.

Do students get paid?

Pay varies depending on the student’s major, class year, level of experience, and the market conditions within the industry of the student’s field of study.

The majority of co-op employers pay a salary, which reinforces that co-op students are full-time, contributing members of a team.

While we hope that students will be compensated at some level for their work, some employers design unpaid internships for credit. Internships for credit are helpful for students trying to gain exposure and create a network in their field of interest. Typically, the time commitment is 10-15 hours per week. Employers should be aware of the U.S. Department of Labor's regulations in working with unpaid interns per the Fair Labor Standards Act.

Students doing an Experiential Network project are not paid, and complete the project as part of an academic course.

What are my responsibilities as an employer if I offer a co-op or internship?

  • Appoint a supervisor. The supervisor will serve as a guide to help monitor the student's progress and encourage the student to apply skills and techniques learned in class. 
  • Set up an orientation. The student should be given an orientation during the first week of employment that outlines expectations around job responsibilities and performance. 
  • Determine a project. The work given to the student needs to align with goals and objectives that meet the student's skills and knowledge level. 
  • Discuss learning goals and objectives. Each student must set professional goals for the internship or co-op that you agree on and can help them achieve. 
  • Require on-site presence 80% of the time. In order to ensure that students benefit from direct supervision, mentorship, and professional development activities that occur, co-op and Internship sites may not be home-based offices. 
  • Ensure that the project is no more than 20% clerical in nature. 
  • Expose student to professional development activities. Along with working on an assigned project, the student should participate in activities such as workshops, speaker events, informational interviews, networking events, company meetings, trainings, etc. 
  • Provide feedback. After the co-op or internship has been completed, feedback will be delivered to the student and the student's academic advisor.

What are my responsibilities as an employer if I sponsor an Experiential Network project?

  • Appoint a primary contact. The primary contact will serve as a sponsor and mentor, while monitoring the student's progress and encourage the student to apply skills and techniques learned in class. 
  • Set a communications schedule. Work with your student to set a standing meeting(s) to discuss project progress.
  • Provide feedback. Throughout the project process and upon completion, deliver feedback directly to your student to aid in their professional development.

Are there prerequisites for students seeking an experiential opportunity? 

There are prerequisites designated for the students to complete.
