Established within the School of Education, the Northeastern University Professional Development Program has been providing quality professional development to educators and schools since 1995. Newly formed in 2005, as a collaboration of the School of Education and the School of Professional and Continuing Studies, the Institute for Professional Development and Graduate Studies in Education, provides a wide range of programs and workshops, consulting services, graduate level courses and degrees to educators across Massachusetts and the Region.
The resources of Northeastern University are brought to local school districts and individuals for both short and long-term professional development and graduate programs. We are committed to the belief that collaborating with district personnel to identify staff development needs and in the design and delivery of programs is key to successful professional development.
Programs are held at times and in locations convenient to participants. Location options include your school or school district, a Northeastern University Campus Boston, Dedham, Burlington or at other regional sites. We also offer online and hybrid courses that give you convenient access to professional development from your home computer.
All programs and courses are designed and implemented by NU faculty, adjunct faculty and school district teachers and administrators.

The Institute builds on eleven successful years of providing workshops, graduate level courses, strategic planning and consulting services to a broad range of school districts and individuals throughout Massachusetts and the region. Our academic programs are designed to support school staff in their effort to meet the Department of Education re-licensing requirements. Programs are designed and delivered by Northeastern Faculty and Adjunct Faculty who are distinguished practitioners in their fields of expertise.
Open Enrollment Programs
Open Enrollment Programs are those programs offered to a general audience of educators, primarily during our Summer Institute Series. Week-long, content-focused courses are offered for graduate credit or professional development points. Topics address the issues of the day, provide content-rich discourse, current readings, and strategies to support immediate application to classroom curriculum. We also offer graduate level open enrollment programs during the school year, September June. Because these programs are designed to be relevant to classroom practice, participants are assigned a Project, usually related to the development of a lesson plan, unit of study or other delivery model, that demonstrates the applicability of program content to student learning. Participants are invited to evaluate their experience and give us feedback about the program.
District-based Programs

District-based Programs are those programs and services designed to meet the unique needs of a specifically defined population, usually at the request of a school district or school. The Institute has developed a reputation as a provider of programs and services that are specifically designed to meet school district needs. Non-credit professional development programs are also provided in a wide range of topics, based on the needs of the district in variety of contexts and timeframes. Graduate level courses are also developed at the request of the district. We offer one-day, multiple-day, one-year and one-year plus programs. Often districts elect to hold programs during the summer. The Institute will collaborate with districts and other professional development providers in the submission of proposals for funding for courses and programs.
Licensure Programs
The Institute offers graduate level courses that meet the Massachusetts DOE standards and competencies for licensure in:
Master of Education Degree
The School of Education and School of Professional and Continuing Studies jointly offer this Master of Education Degree through the Institute for Professional Development and Graduate Studies in Education. The Degree is offered to educators seeking to advance their abilities and careers with knowledge and competencies that will enhance their practice while preparing them to be successful within today's diverse and dynamic educational environments.
The Masters program has two primary tracks and a number of specialization. Track one focuses on grades K-12 for elementary and secondary educators. Track two focuses on adult and higher education and is offered to those working in post-secondary institutions or corporate learning environments. Both tracks share common elements but are designed for different audiences and offer different specializations.
Degree strands for the K12 audience include Mathematics, Literacy, Special Education, Science, Leadership and Instructional Technology. All courses previously taken in the Special Education, Mathematics and Leadership licensure programs are considered as a component of the Masters Degree in those specializations, thereby making all credits earned transferable to the degree.
