John D. O'Bryant High School – Boston Public Schools
The John D. O'Bryant High School has partnered with the Institute for the past six years on a wide range of projects including a School Climate Study, professional development for Science teachers and a two year planning initiative with the guidance staff.
In Fall 2005, the Institute was engaged by the John D. O’Bryant to help develop a Strategic Plan for the school. The Institute worked with a Planning Committee of school-based personnel, central office staff and parents to plan focus groups, design key questions, analyze the data gathered and develop the goals and objectives for the school’s five year plan.
Boston Teachers Union
Since 1997 the Institute has collaborated with the BTU on the development of professional development programs specifically and uniquely designed to meet the needs of paraprofessionals in the Boston Public Schools. These programs have encompassed topics in literacy, mathematics, instructional strategies and behavior management.
Similar programs for paraprofessionals and teaching assistants have been implemented in Lynn, New Bedford, Fall River and Milford.
Milford Public Schools
The Institute has partnered with the Milford Public Schools for the past six years, to design and deliver a wide array of professional development initiatives for all school staff, K-12. Various delivery models have been utilized from day-long workshops to year-long graduate level courses. Professional development has included classroom modeling and observation as well as required projects that focus on classroom needs and implementation strategies. Instructors have included both practitioners as well as University faculty. Literacy, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Teacher Portfolio Development, Leadership Training for Principals, Differentiated Instruction and Authentic Assessment are some of the topics addressed over the years. Professional development in Mathematics and in Literacy has been designed specifically for teaching assistants in grades K–8.
Quincy Public Schools
For the past two years the Institute has partnered with the Quincy Public Schools on a Content Institute Grant awarded by the Massachusetts DOE. NU has provided faculty to consult on the project and to teach mathematics content to early elementary teachers.
Lowell Public Schools
The Institute has worked with the Lowell Public Schools (LPS) for the past three years on their mathematics initiative, with a focus on content for both elementary and middle school staff. Graduate-level courses have been delivered that focus on mathematics content needed to teach the Everyday Mathematics Program and the Connected Mathematics Program adopted by the district.
In the 2005-2006 year the LPS received a Comprehensive School Reform Grant from the Massachusetts DOE. The CSR grant targeted three middle schools in need of Mathematics development for teachers in grades 5–8. The Institute designed and implemented this training for the district.
Foxborough Regional Charter School
Institute staff has worked with the Foxborough Regional Charter School’s board and school administrators to develop an organizational structure and a plan to help them make the transition to an independently managed facility. The Institute has also facilitated the development of a curriculum-mapping and review process for all school programs.
Taunton Public Schools
The Institute has designed and implemented several mathematics content courses for middle school teachers in the Taunton Public Schools.
Health Careers Academy - Boston Public Schools
Using a focus group model, the Institute facilitated the development of a Strategic Plan for Health Careers Academy. Recently over 90% of school staff completed an 18-month special education licensure program.
