Course Description:  Aimed at educational professionals who work with English language learners, this course is constructed to provide foundational knowledge of the various cognitive, linguistic, and cultural influences of second language acquisition. This course meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Education Category One (Second Language Learning and Teaching) as outlined in the June 15, 2004 memo from Commissioner Driscoll indicating the skills and qualifications for teachers in structured English immersion classrooms.

Course Description:  Aimed at educational professionals who work with English language learners, this course is designed to equip participants with essential knowledge and skills to effectively organize and implement content area instruction appropriate for English Language Learners at different levels of English proficiency.  This course meets the requirements of Category Two (Sheltered Content Instruction) as outlined in the June 15, 2004 memo from Commissioner Driscoll indicating the qualifications for teachers in sheltered English immersion classrooms.  With an intense focus on sheltered content instruction for a variety of proficiency levels and content areas.  Course participants will master instructional strategies and design content area lessons compatible with these principles and relate them to the Curriculum Frameworks and Massachusetts English Language Proficiency.

Course Description:  This course is designed for all teachers of English Language Learners at the Elementary and Secondary levels.  Educators taking this course will develop knowledge of the process of literacy development for second language learners and strategies to assist ELL students in the different stages of second language usage and in particular in the areas of reading and writing in content areas.  This course meets the requirements of the Massachusetts Department of Education Category Four (Reading and Writing to Limited English Proficient Students) as outlined in the June 15, 2004 memo from Commissioner Driscoll indicating the skills and qualifications for teachers in structured English immersion classrooms.
