Massachusetts Elementary School Principals Association (MESPA)

Licensure in School Administration

In conjunction with Northeastern University MESPA offers its outstanding administrative preparation program leading to licensure as an elementary, middle, or high school principal. This unique program, the first of its kind in the United States, has become a model for preparation programs within the state and across the nation. The MESPA Licensure Program is intended for educators in other fields of the profession as well as those whose work experience is outside of the field of education.

The MESPA Licensure Program was approved by the Massachusetts Department of Education and has also been commended by the DOE, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and other state associations for:

  • Designing a principals licensure program based on recent research, new standards and expectations, recent research, and sound principles and beliefs
  • Providing a preparation that meets the Department of Education licensing requirements, the diverse leadership needs of schools and districts, and the particular needs of students with different personal backgrounds and work experiences during their field experiences


MESPA

The MESPA Licensure Program involves students in individual study, cohort group discussions, class presentations, and practical field work all related to current research, practitioners insights, and successful practices. An exceptional faculty and experienced mentors guide students through coursework and field experiences. The program meets all Massachusetts DOE requirements and competencies including the demonstration of proficiency in addressing the Professional Standards for Administrators.

Participants earn 24 quarter hour graduate credits from Northeastern University for the licensure portion of this program. All credits earned will apply towards a Masters Degree in Educational Leadership at Northeastern University. The MESPA Licensure Program is usually completed in 18 months, depending on the participants work schedule, Practicum schedule and initiative. Some students need the second summer and fall to complete the Practicum field experience.
